What I do now - Senior Video Editor @ Simon Squibb
I cut the channel's long-form YouTube videos and the short-form videos that come off the same shoots.
I have worked across all social media platforms for over 10 years - agency work, brand work, broadcaster channels, and creator channels. Some of it was made for audiences outside the UK. A good deal of it was cut around people with large followings, where the face on the thumbnail is the reason anyone clicks at all.
Long-form is the part I care most about. A 20-minute video earns its audience on its own: nobody is scheduled to watch it, no ident carries it into the room, and the first 30 seconds decide whether the other 19 minutes get seen at all.
The 10 years are what took the guesswork out. What to open on, what to cut, how long a section can run before it costs you - I am not working those out from first principles any more. See my checklist for more details on how to optimise your own YouTube channel.
